Komal Thareja

Thareja is a Senior Research Software Engineer at RENCI, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she serves as software lead for the NSF FABRIC testbed, overseeing development of the FABRIC Control Framework — delivering advanced networking services, heterogeneous accelerators, distributed storage, and experiment orchestration across FABRIC's 29 nationwide sites. Before joining RENCI, she spent thirteen years architecting large-scale systems in industry, primarily in communications software.

 

Her current research builds AI harnesses over complex infrastructure and workflow systems so domain scientists can use them directly. She is a co-creator of LoomAI, the AI-augmented interface FABRIC launched in 2026 for designing and deploying experiments through visual and natural-language interaction, and a core developer of PegasusAI Studio, which turns plain-language descriptions into runnable workflows. She is also primary architect of SWARM, a fully decentralized multi-agent workflow system that replaces centralized schedulers with consensus-based coordination.
