NSF LFO 2022 Research Infrastructure Workshop - CI Compass - Cyberinfrastructure Workshop

-

Location: Boulder, Colorado

From the National Science Foundation Research Infrastructure Outreach:

The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Large Facilities Office (LFO) will host the 2022 Research Infrastructure Workshop from September 13 to September 16, 2022, in Boulder, CO. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the Geodetic Facility for the Advancement of Geoscience (GAGE), the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and the National Solar Observatory (NSO) are joint co-hosts for the event.

Attendees will have the option to attend the workshop in-person or virtually.

The workshop will feature four tracks: Award Management and Guidance; Program and Project Management; Facilities and Operations Management; and Education and Public Outreach.

This year, workshop participants will have the option to register for specialty workshops on the last day of the event: a Cyberinfrastructure Workshop led by CI Compass; a Facility Safety Officer Workshop; and a Cyber Security Workshop led by Trusted CI.

Cyberinfrastructure Workshop - led by CI Compass

Hosted in-person and virtually on Friday, September 16, 2022. This workshop will take place at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m EST / 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST / 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. MDT / 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. / PST.

The agenda for the CI Workshop is available below.

Keynote Speakers

  • Roland Roberts, NSF, Deputy Chief Officer for Research Facilities
  • Matt Hawkins, NSF, Head of Large Facilities Office

First Panel: Guiding principles and best data practices for large-scale data management and dissemination: Challenges and Opportunities

Panel lead: Angela Murillo, Indiana University, CI Compass co-PI

Data management processes such as storage, curation, and archiving  impact data dissemination and discoverability. This panel will address specific data management and discoverability opportunities and challenges within large-scale data cyberinfrastructures. The panelists, which represent a wide range of Major Facilities and other large-scale data facilities and research projects, will present their specific approaches and best practices and will provide an understanding of current and future challenges and opportunities in data management and dissemination. The panel presentations will be followed by a community discussion on the challenges of data management and dissemination.

Panelists:

  • Giri Prakash, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
  • Jeffrey Glatstein, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
  • Chris Bontempi, Network for Advanced NMR (NAN)
  • Christine Laney, National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON)

Second Panel: Cyberinfrastructure Training: Challenges and Opportunities

Panel lead: Kerk Kee, Texas Tech, CI Compass Senior Personnel

Cyberinfrastructure (CI) training for major facility users, scientists, students and CI professionals is a fundamental element, not only for workforce development, but also for effective use and development of CI in scientific facilities. Although there are some existing efforts toward providing CI training within the facilities and in the broader CI community, significant gaps remain. The CI training panel will address specific CI training challenges for CI professionals within large-scale data cyberinfrastructures, for users who want to effectively use the CI for scientific research, and for teaching and inspiring the next generation of students. Panelists will present their unique perspectives on CI training, existing training programs within their facilities and projects, current and future challenges in CI training, and their current and future plans to address those challenges. The panel presentations will be followed by discussions with the community on challenges and path forward for CI training issues.

Panelists:

  • Brian Dobbins, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
  • Tim Cockerill, Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC)
  • Margaret Levenstein, Research Data Ecosystem (RDE)
  • Ana Hunsinger, Internet2
