Abstract:

Through the International Research Network Connections (IRNC) program and other cyberinfrastructure programs, NSF has enabled the growth and enrichment of a globally connected science ecosystem. An outcome of the IRNC program has been the partnerships formed between the Research and Education (R&E) network operators to target the expansion of their networks to reach and support production use of multi-Gbps connectivity to remote science instrumentation and communities. Major facilities operating in other countries normally transport data collected from their instruments to data processing centers in the U.S. for the creation of science data products. Leveraging Research and Education (R&E) networks is the most cost effective way for Major Facilities to transport science data to their U.S.-based data processing centers. This webinar will present R&E networks, their role in supporting major facilities, and the successful collaborations that have been created between major facilities and R&E networks. The cost effectiveness of R&E networks, and examples of successful collaborations will be presented that feature the unique capabilities of R&E networks to support the production science of major facilities.
