Abstract

Effective data governance is essential for enabling open, interdisciplinary science, but successful governance depends on community engagement as much as policy. This presentation shares lessons from the NASA Science Mission Directorate's (SMD) efforts to build a collaborative governance framework that supports the stewardship of research data, software, and other digital assets across its scientific community. Topics include agile governance practices, details on governance guidance drafted to date, developing communities of practice, and fostering interoperability across repositories and disciplines. The discussion highlights practical approaches that have emerged from SMD's governance initiatives and offers lessons that can be adapted across the broader research ecosystem to support long-term stewardship and open science.

Bio

Kaylin Bugbee leads the Information Management focus area within the Office of Data Science and Informatics (ODSI) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. She manages a portfolio of projects that aims to make NASA’s scientific data systems and information resources more discoverable, resilient and efficient while also enabling open science through reinforcing transparency, reproducibility and open access. Together, this collection of projects is part of the Data and Analysis Services Project (DASP), also led by Bugbee and managed by the Office of the Chief Science Data Officer (OCSDO). Her efforts to generate, repair, improve, care for, document and update NASA’s science data ensure they are available not only today but for the scientists and decision makers of the future.
