The CI Compass Executive Committee announced on March 1, 2023, that Nicole (Nicky) Virdone, CI Compass Project Manager, has been given the additional title of CI Compass Director of Outreach.

Virdone joined the CI Compass leadership team in the position of Project Manager in April 2022. She is based out of the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institution. Throughout her year with CI Compass, she has stepped into the Project Manager role of task management, resource planning, and project partner outreach. She has contributed greatly to the CI Compass Student Fellowship program, and has been instrumental in outreach to the Minority Serving Cyberinfrastructure Consortium, National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Facilities, and more.

“Throughout the past year, I’ve had a fantastic experience working with CI Compass team, the center’s partner projects, and NSF Facilities researchers across the country,” said Virdone. “I am looking forward to continuing my work with the center.”

Virdone’s contribution to CI Compass efforts has been recognized by CI Compass leadership, with a unanimous decision to promote to her new role.

“We are extremely lucky to have Nicky on our CI Compass team. In less than one year on the project, she has learned about cyberinfrastructure, the NSF Major Facilities, has taken the reins of managing the project, and has worked very closely with CI Compass Student Fellowship (CICF) Director Angela Murillo on making the student program a success. The new title recognizes Nicky’s leadership in connecting with students and the community,” said Ewa Deelman, CI Compass Principal Investigator.

“Nicky’s contribution to the CICF has been tremendous. She has been pivotal in student recruitment and marketing strategy, the application and selection process, and the technical curriculum structure and delivery. She has helped ensure that the second year of the student program has been extremely successful.  I'm excited to continue working with her in our future CICF programs,” said Angela Murillo, CICF Director, and CI Compass Co-Principal Investigator.

Previous to her role with CI Compass, Virdone was a Research Engineer at Sigma Design, Inc., and a Biomedical Research Assistant at Duke University. She has an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and a B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.
